Our Current Artist in Residence: Rick Deforrest
Rick Deforrest was born in Little Falls New York. A small artistic hamlet carved between the murky backwaters of the Mohawk River and the small foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. As a toddler, Rick was blessed with an uncanny ability to consume twice his body weight in soft drinks which made his temperament somewhat erratic, but he found solace in coloring books and melting army men. Rick has a BFA in ceramics form Northern Kentucky University. Rick lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, is engaged in art making, and is hoping to show his work internationally.
Rick’s Artist Statement:
The creatures I create focus on the issue of identity, being, and awareness of self. In making them I hope to develop a dialogue with the viewer. My hybrid creatures are in a consistent state of flux and are not completely resolved. My hope is that this sense of ambiguity provides more questions to the viewer.
Our Residency program is designed to allow emerging and established artists the space to develop work in a supportive and creative environment, foster innovative teaching concepts, provide support for new and exciting workshop ideas, and give residents the ability to “test drive” different clay career possibilities.
The residency program is unique in that it emphasizes the development of the individual as a part of a larger whole whether it is in:
- teaching skills
- artistic growth
- professional development through our gallery and gallerie annex
- exercising the right brain through the business and retail side
- constructing new tools and techniques
You get a little bit of everything in the clay world at FUNKē FIRED ARTS. With a fun and lively staff, you decide the direction that you need to take, and we are right behind you to support and mentor you in either one specific area or all across the board.
